My name is Kylie and I work in Columbus, Ohio. I locally manage The Heritage Museum, a Victorian house museum that was once the home of Ohio’s Civil War-era Governor, David Tod. I care for the archives of Kappa Kappa Gamma and also oversee operations at Kappa’s Stewart House Museum in Monmouth, Illinois.

Our long-range plan for the museums and archives include expanding our educational programs, digitizing our archive and museum collections as well as completing two women’s history exhibits that will cover the period 1920-2020 (we’ve already completed 1870-1920.)

It’s rather ambitious and I’m hoping the AAM virtual conference will spark some ideas and new solutions!

My name is Sarah Jencks. I am the Director of Education at Ford’s Theatre Society in Washington, DC. We are a working, producing theatre and also a museum and National Historic Site. The Society is a non-profit organization that operates in partnership with the National Park Service. This past February, we opened the new Ford’s Theatre Center for Education and Leadership, which expands our programming to include two more floors of permanent exhibit space, a floor for temporary exhibit space, a video-conferencing/distance learning studio and two education studios. It is both exciting and daunting!

  3. Tomasina April 26, 2012 at 8:03 pm #

My name is Tomasina, and I am a Museology Master’s candidate at the University of Washington working on the responsible use of deaccessioning to refine collections. I also work as a collections assistant in the Archaeology department of the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture where I catalog incoming collections, complete inventories and create storage solutions.

A native Seattleite about to graduate, I am looking for a collection stewardship position on the East Coast. I am looking forward to participating in the virtual conference to spark some ideas about how collections can be better leveraged in support of mission!

My name is Lisa, and I work for the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California. Specifically, I work at the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, which since 2006 is the home of the ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities collection. I am responsible for coordinating the public lecture, seminar, and symposia programs. I’m interested to learn about how to best expand the reach of the programs we offer beyond the walls of our museum through technology and social media. I expect to learn a lot just by participating in this virtual conference!

  5. Ann M. Knoll April 30, 2012 at 12:47 pm #

My name is Ann and I have been the associate director of the Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame for over 11 years. My main areas of responsibility are financial, facilities management, exhibitions, marketing/PR, human resources, and Nazi-era provenance research on our collection.

We are currently preparing to re-design our website and attempting to use more social media tools in our exhibitions, so I am hoping to increase my expertise in how we can better serve our students and faculty through technology.

  6. lindsay.stern April 30, 2012 at 1:00 pm #

My name is Lindsay Stern and I am the Education Coordinator at the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) in Woodstock, NY. As the only educator within a staff of six, I am responsible for all interpretive programs (exhibition related and otherwise), as well as planning and managing our annual Woodstock Photography Workshop and Lecture Series, which runs Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. Additionally, I supervise the workshop intern staff.

CPW is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, so a number of exciting shifts are on the horizon. Our website is in the midst of a much needed overhaul, and we are moving towards streaming our lectures as part of this change. CPW is also planning a three day photo festival for August to celebrate our anniversary, and hope to connect with our community local and beyond through this special event.

I am looking forward to the next two days of online discussion, and hope to glean new ideas and strategies for reaching out to our diverse audience.

  8. Deb April 30, 2012 at 3:13 pm #

My name is Deb Wiedel and I am the Assistant Curator of Exhibitions at the Columbus Museum, Columbus, Georgia. We are unique in that we are both an American Art and Regional History Museum. The other factor that makes us unique is that we receive a portion of our operating funds from the Muscogee County School District and about half of our staff are scholl board employees. We have a staff of 34 and we do everything in-house except for the actual printing of publications and advertising. We have one of the largest print collections in the Southeast.

  13. anelson1 April 30, 2012 at 4:32 pm #

Hello everyone, my name is Amanda Nelson and I am currently serving with the Ohio History Service Corps in Columbus, Ohio. As Maria stated earlier, the OHSC is an AmeriCorps program that is overseen by the Ohio Historical Society. My current role in the OHSC is the Central Ohio Coordinator of the Civil War 150 Leadership Corps. This year, I have been serving to create partnerships with other Central Ohio region museums and organizations to help commemorate the Civil War Sesquicentennial and increase their volunteer base and membership. In addition, I have also been assisting our State Coordinator of Ohio History Day in preparation for States (April 28, 2012) and Nationals (June 10-14, 2012). And lastly, I am serving on a project of my own–a project devoted to placing 26 headstones at the graves of Civil War soldiers buried in Green Lawn Cemetery (Columbus, OH). I hold a B.A. in American Studies, with a concentration in Media and Cultural Studies from Macalester College. And in Fall 2013, I plan to pursue a Masters in African-American Studies/Public History.

  15. msmuseumart April 30, 2012 at 4:35 pm #

We are Beth Batton and Amber Schneider with the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson. Beth is the curator of the collection and Amber is the registrar. We engage visitors with works of art from our permanent collection primarily through exhibitions that are either on permanent display in Jackson or that tour to rural areas of the state. We’re interested in learning how we can share artworks from art storage in a way that doesn’t require as many resources as organizing an exhibition does but that encourages participation with art.
We’re looking forward to the sessions today and tomorrow.
    Beth & Amber

The system and software we use on the archives are in need of major overhaul and I am looking to get new ideas and suggestions from this session and the experience of the moderators and attendees.
